About the Training

Learn to play crystal singing bowls, gongs, drums, and other sound bath instruments from practitioners with over two decades of experience. This hands-on training covers how different instruments affect the listener and teaches techniques for playing them in a therapeutic, wellness-focused way.

Open to all levels, this standalone training is designed for anyone interested in exploring sound bath instruments and learning how to play them effectively. This workshop also complements the Group Soundbath Player™ Certification Course by providing hands-on experience in listening to and practicing many of the playing techniques taught in the course.

The Instructors 

This training is taught by Jamie Bechtold and Robert Lee, co-creators of the first Soundbath Practitioner Training in 2017 and the co-founders of SoundbathPlayer, The Soundbath Center, and The Gong Room®. Jamie has been playing sound baths with gongs and crystal singing bowls professionally since 2004, with more than 4,000 public events across Los Angeles and Southern California. Robert has worked in fitness and wellness since 1997, with a focus on structured, results-oriented programming; he began leading breathwork sessions in 2013 and incorporated sound baths into his practice in 2015.

Training Overview

Schedule
12pm to 6pm each day (may end early for very small groups). The outline below provides the workshop sections in a general order, which is subject to change without notice.

Instruments
All instruments are provided for use during the workshop. Please do not bring your own instruments. 

What to wear and not wear
Wear comfortable, relaxed clothing suitable for sitting on the floor. Do not wear tops with loose, hanging sleeves, long necklaces, or jewelry on your hands or arms, including rings, bracelets, or watches.

Food & Breaks
Please eat before the workshop. Short breaks will be provided throughout the day, but there will be no extended meal break and no time to leave the venue for food. If needed, please bring a snack to eat during a break. Only water is permitted inside the venue; all food and other beverages must remain in your car and may be consumed during breaks.

Day 1


Introduction to Sound Bath Instruments

Get familiar with commonly used sound bath instruments, including crystal singing bowls, gongs, drums, rain makers, chimes, and wave drums.


Volume, Pitch, and the Body

Learn how volume and pitch can affect the body and why that matters for anyone playing sound bath instruments for wellness.


How Different Instruments Affect the Listener

Not all instruments produce the same effect. Go deeper into how instrument selection can affect the listener's experience.


How Playing Style Shapes the Results You Achieve

The way you play matters. We cover the differences among instrument playing styles and how playing style is one of the biggest determinants of the results achieved in any sound-based experience.


Frequency, Notes, Octaves, and Basic Music Theory

A practical introduction to sound science: how frequency, pitch, overtones, and octaves work, and what the research actually supports about how sound affects the body.


How Crystal Bowls Affect the Body

Crystal bowls can have both positive and negative effects on the body depending on how they're played. Learn what those effects are and how to get the most out of your playing.


Crystal Bowls: Types and Differences

Not all crystal bowls are equal. Learn the differences between types, what those differences mean in practice, and what to listen for.


Crystal Bowl Playing Techniques: Learn and Practice

Hands-on practice playing crystal bowls. You'll also learn the basics of combining bowls musically.


Day 2


Receive a Sound Bath

Experience a gong & bowl sound bath played using many of the techniques taught in the workshop.


Gong Listening Exploration

Develop your ear by listening to a range of gongs. You'll learn to identify differences in tone, quality, and character that matter when playing or buying a gong.


How Gongs Affect the Body

Learn why gongs are essential to therapeutic sound work, how they help induce and sustain the hypnagogic state, and what makes their sound distinct from other sound bath instruments.


Gong Types

Go into the differences in gongs including types, materials, and makers and how to select one that fits for your goals.


Gong Playing Techniques: Learn and Practice

Learn and practice proprietary gong playing techniques and be guided through practice drills taught only in person.


Supportive Sound Bath Instruments

Explore and play a variety of supporting instruments that are played in sound baths, including chimes, rain maker, and wave drum.


Instrument Purchasing Guidance (optional)

Stay for one-on-one buying advice on the instruments we carry. Listen to gongs, get help selecting a bowl set, and get recommendations on mallets and stands. Workshop participants receive special discounts.

  • Must be in good standing with Beyond Percussion, along with its subsidiaries and associated companies, including The Gong Room, SoundbathPlayer, and The Soundbath Center.

Refund & Transfer Policy

The Soundbath Center does not issue refunds for this training once payment is made. If you cannot attend, your options are to transfer your registration to a different date or to file a claim through Purchase Protection if you added it to your order.

Transfer requests must be submitted by email and completed at least 72 hours (3 days) before the training begins. Transfers apply only to other scheduled dates of the same workshop. A transfer is not complete until a new date within 6 months of your original date has been selected and the applicable fee has been paid. The transfer fees are as follows:

  • 30 days or more before the workshop: $100
  • Between 3 and 29 days before the workshop: $200
  • Less than 72 hours before the workshop: No transfers permitted, no exceptions


Required Workshop Agreements

After submitting payment, you'll need to digitally sign two agreements: the "Workshop Participation Agreement" and the "General Release, Waiver of Liability, and Ticket Agreement." Links to both will be sent after payment, and once they're signed, you'll receive your QR code ticket for the workshop.
